Spring into the digital age at the Tom Green County Library. We are proud to announce that Downloadable Audio is here! A simple click from our web page http://www.tgclibrary.com will take you to the exciting world of digital media. Now with a few simple clicks you can download recorded books and music directly to your computer, or to an Mp3 player. The titles are checked out using your library card, and are automatically returned for you at the end of two weeks. This digital library can be accessed 24 hours a day from your home computer. Can’t sleep? Just dying to hear the new John Grisham but can’t get to the Library? Want to hear an audiobook through that new Mp3 you bought? Just click on the Library’s webpage, then on the flashing link to download audiobooks (both new titles and classics), and music.

Spring is blossoming in our Children’s Department, too. This month the theme is “Green is for Growing” The Main Library (113 W. Beauregard) will have preschool storytimes on Tuesday, March 7, 14, 21, and 28 at 10:00 and 10:30. At the Angelo West Branch (3013 Vista Del Arroyo) the storytime will be on Tuesday, March 27 at 10:00 a.m. and will be on the theme “Green is Keen!” The North Angelo Branch Library (3001 N. Chadbourne) will have a storytime on Thursday, March 22 at 4:00 p.m. on the theme “Go Green! Recycle and Reuse”

Spring is a great time to start a new project so “Get Crafty” will be the March display at the Main Library. Find an assortment of books, videos and dvds on handicrafts and do-it-yourself projects. The Art Wall will be displaying watercolors by Irene Meitzen and photographs by Fritz Meitzen. The Angelo West Branch will be displaying oils and watercolors by Sue Meecham.

The Friends of the Library Book Club will meet at the Angelo West Branch Library (3013 Vista Del Arroyo) Tuesday, March 13 at 6:00. They will be discussing “South of Reason” by Cindy Eppes. The North Angelo Branch Library Book Club will meet on Thursday, March 15 at 6:00. The title this month is “Chiefs” by Stuart Woods. Both meetings are open to the public, and all are welcome to attend.

La Esperanza Clinic will be at the North Angelo Branch Library (3001 N. Chadbourne) on Thursday, March 15th, from 1:00-3:00 p.m. to give free blood pressure checks and talk about basic health issues.

The Friends of the Library are sorting books for their Book sale in the basement of the Library, and are looking for volunteers. If you are interested, call Sheila Fisher at 949-8782.

BookNews

The Tom Green County Library System has introduced BookNews, a new online service for readers. This new reader's advisory service gives readers access to free electronic newsletters about a wide variety of books via the library system's newly-revamped Web site, www.tgclibrary.com, or delivered directly to their e-mail address.

Readers can access the service via the BookNews link from the home page of www.tgclibrary.com, and select the newsletters they wish to read. They can also elect to receive the monthly newsletters via e-mail on the 15th of each month.

Readers can select electronic newsletters based on genres, including new fiction, new non-fiction, mystery, classics, business books, home and garden books, and science fiction books. The newsletters are also categorized by books that have received awards, such as the Pulitzer Prize for History and a newsletter about works for children that have received the Caldecott Medal for illustration. Other categories include age (such as books for children and teens), large-print books, audio books and other interests.

The newsletters include reviews, descriptions and author commentaries. Links within the newsletters take subscribers directly to the Tom Green County Library System catalog, so they can easily see if a title is available at their local library or anywhere in the library system.

BookNews is just one feature of the system's new Web site, which features a number of other services. The site provides access to full-text articles in thousands of magazines and newspapers, selected Internet sites for research, electronic books from NetLibrary, the "Ask a Librarian" online reference service, and more.

Love to Read Books, But Just Can’t Find the Time?

The librarians at Tom Green County Library have just discovered the secret for finding the time to read a good book again…and they’re just itching to tell you about it.

The Tom Green County Library has gone high-tech and they’re now offering the latest, hottest idea for people who want desperately to read, but just can’t find the time. Tom Green County Library delivers portions of books to you in your email. Each day, Monday through Friday, the library emails subscribers a portion of a book that takes about 5-minutes to read. By the end of the week, subscribers have read two to three chapters from the book and if they like it, they check it out of the library. New books are featured every week.

There are 11 book clubs to choose from. Something for every age and taste: Fiction, NonFiction, Mystery, Romance, Science Fiction, Good News, Horror, Business, Teen, and Audio books (that you can listen to in your email) and a special sneak preview Pre-Pub Club that lets you start reading books that aren’t even published yet.

You don’t even need a library card to sign up and start reading. Library Director Larry Justiss says, "This service makes it easy for people to get back into the habit of reading. It’s fun, it only takes 5-minutes-a-day and the books are delivered to you right in your email. At your home, work or even in your PDA."

Texas Heritage Online

Texas Heritage Online provides unified online access to Texas' historical documents and images for use by teachers, students, historians, genealogists, and other researchers.

You can learn about the Texas Heritage Digitization Iinitiative, a cooperative project to identify, describe, digitize, preserve, and make broadly accessible special collections of history and culture held by archives, museums, historical societies, and uther institutions in Texas.

Library move takes big leap

The Tom Green County library is one big step closer to the old Hemphill-Wells de-partment store.

County commissioners Tuesday approved a contract with Holzman Moss Architecture and Craig Kinney Architects for the design and construction of the new library. Supporters have raised about $12 million in pledges and donations in the past year for the move.

The total project will cost about $15.9 million, with construction costs of about $12.9 million. The remaining money will be spent on architectural fees, other potential consultant fees and the price of a construction manager, said Larry Justiss, library administrator.

Commissioners also voted to allow the firms to begin schematic design plans for the new library.

The library design committee ''has spent a substantial amount of time with the architectural firms and have done a great job,'' the county's legal counsel, Keith Davis, said before recommending the commissioners approve the contract.

''A lot of thought has gone into this matter.''

The fundraising goal for the entire library project is about $20.9 million, which is higher than the original goal of $16.4 million, for construction and operation of the library. That includes the $3.4 million value of the building and a $1.5 million endowment that will be used to operate the new library.

The city of San Angelo owns the building but has agreed to lease it to the county for $1 a year for 99 years - a $99 tab that Steve and Pollyanna Stephens agreed to pay.

About 1,300 people use the main library daily.

Higher construction costs and greater-than-expected deterioration of the old department store contributed to the increase, Steve Stephens said. Construction is expected to begin in November 2007 and end in spring 2009, according to preliminary plans.

Stephens, who has donated $2 million to the project, said the move is ''officially under way'' with Tuesday's vote.

''It really feels good,'' Stephens said. ''So much has gone into this. Nothing is more important in a community than the educational center. And this is important for the revitalization of downtown. The Hemphill-Wells is a great building that has been an eyesore for decades.''

The library move and renovation will be done in phases beginning with the design, design development and construction. The commissioners' court must review and approve each phase, Davis said.

Justiss said the new library will offer opportunities not existent in the Edd B. Keyes Building. More space will allow the library to host educational programs and use meeting rooms to provide educational forums, he said.

''It will be a huge difference for the user,'' Justiss said. ''The library has cramped space. People usually have no place to sit, they are shoulder to shoulder and the books shelves are 100 percent full. We basically have books in backrooms and on the floor.''

The Tom Green County Library is pleased to announce three exciting new databases that are available on our webpage.
Smithsonian Global Sound - produced in partnership with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, is a virtual encyclopedia of the world's musical and aural traditions. The collection provides educators, students, and interested listeners with an unprecedented variety of online resources that support the creation, continuity, and preservation of diverse musical forms.
Classical Music Library - Classical Music Library is the world's largest multi-label database of Classical music recordings for listening and learning in libraries.
African American Song - the first online resource to document the history of African American music in an online music listening service. The collection contains a diverse range of genres such as jazz, blues, gospel, ragtime, folk songs, and narratives, among others.
The first two titles are available on our database. The third title, African American Song, is available at http://tomgreen4.classical.com/

Public Input sought for Planning for Tom Green County Library

Public Input is presently being sought in the planning process for the Tom Green County Library. A new central library facility is presently being planned for the Hemphill-Wells Building in downtown San Angelo. The consultants who are developing a long-range plan for library services, Averus Corporation, are seeking public input to make the new central library user-friendly. As a part of the planning process, the consultants will also address branch libraries.
A public meeting will be held at 6:30 PM on Thursday, January 26 at the San Angelo Convention Center – City Council Chambers to receive public comment and input on Tom Green County’s existing and future library services. Persons participating in the public meeting are encouraged to complete a questionnaire about library services and needs. Copies of the questionnaire are available at the central and branch libraries.

Completed questionnaires must be received at one of the libraries no later than noon Friday, January 20. The results will be tabulated and reviewed at the meeting on January 26.

Big boost for books

What a Christmas gift.

The San Angelo Health Foundation played Santa Claus on Monday, handing out about $2.6 million to 14 area nonprofit organizations. The Tom Green County Library got the lion's share receiving $1.75 million towards its move and renovations in the old Hemphill-Wells Building.

It's the largest single amount awarded by the foundation, said Larry Justiss, library administrator. County and city leaders made the library grant announcement Monday in the old department store, at 29 W. Beauregard Ave.

''This is a story of change,'' said Howard Taylor, director of the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts. ''The downtown group is active in the positive things that are happening. This is very symbolic of where the community is going.''

The grant pushes the money available for the library move to $8.7 million, including the value of the building. The total bill is estimated to be $16.5 million.

Trying to protect taxpayers' dollars, an independent committee has until Dec. 31, 2010 - the deadline to open the library under the lease agreement - to raise the needed money.

The San Angelo Area Foundation is the administrator for the ''Beacon to the Future'' fund, which will be spent paying for the move and renovations. The foundation is accepting donations for the fund.

Monday's grants represent the foundation's most-significant commitment in total dollars and number of awards in one quarter. It's the foundation's ninth year of awarding grants. The foundation has given more than $24 million to more than 130 organizations and 288 projects.

Justiss also announced David Price of Burnet has been hired as consultant for the project. Price has been a library consultant since 1969, with jobs including California's state library system, and county and city libraries in Austin and Fort Worth.

''There are some empty, gaping holes in downtown,'' Taylor said. ''This will help fuel a dynamic infusion of life in downtown.''

LIBRARY FUND IS OFFICIALLY ESTABLISHED

The Tom Green County Commissioners Court officially approved the creation of the “Beacon of the Future Fund” at today’s meeting. The County has agreed to use the San Angelo Area Foundation as the Fund Administrator following approval of the County Auditor and County Treasurer. The Foundation will be responsible for accepting, booking, and receipting all donations and grants towards this fund. The County and the Foundation are both excited to be working together for the creation of the new Tom Green County Library in the former Hemphill-Wells building.

The Foundation will officially begin accepting donations towards the capital campaign, today. The Foundation will also manage the permanent endowment fund that will provide operational assistance for the new library. Donors wanting to donate to the capital campaign can make their checks payable to the San Angelo Area Foundation and note the Beacon of the Future Fund in the memo line of their check and mail it to the Foundation at their offices: 2201 Sherwood Way, Suite 205, San Angelo, Texas 76901 The Foundation can also accept gifts of publicly traded stock towards this fund. For more information about making a gift to the capital campaign, call the Foundation office at 947-7071. All donations are tax deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law and donations made prior to December 31, 2005 are eligible for a tax deduction in the 2005 tax year.

Pollyanna and Steve Stephens have pledged 2 million dollars towards the renovation project and plan to begin official fundraising efforts in January 2006. When accounting for the value of Hemphill-Wells Building, funds on hand and the Stephens pledge, the campaign will need to raise an additional 9.5 million dollars. “We are truly getting closer to seeing the new library become a reality. We are excited about today’s action and look forward to watching the money come in.” said Larry Justiss, library administrator.

Library Expansion

San Angelo and Tom Green County leaders agreed on a lease Wednesday that could turn the Hemphill-Wells Building into the county library. San Angelo residents Steve and Pollyanna Stephens said they will donate $2 million toward the $16 million project. The building offers 85,000 square feet of floor space, compared with the 24,000 square feet the library operates with now.

Library Of Texas Available From Library Web Site

The Texas State Library unveils the Library of Texas
Users can search 100 Texas library catalogs in one search session from new Web-based state service
Austin - The Texas State Library and Archives Commission is pleased to announce a new service, the Library of Texas. This Web-based service at LibraryofTexas.org allows users to discover and retrieve information from multiple library catalogs, research databases, and other knowledge collections in one simple search session. Texans no longer need to use a separate interface for each individual library or database. At present, the Library of Texas searches through the catalogs of 63 public libraries, 26 academic libraries, and 40 TexShare commercial databases.

According to Network Services Librarian Kevin Marsh, who coordinated the development of the Library of Texas, the service is easy to use, yet very powerful and customizable. Notes Marsh, "Users can customize the service to include specific libraries near their homes or offices, and then create and save groups of 'favorites' for future searching." Many search results from the TexShare research databases will include the original full-text article, satisfying the information needs of the user right away. For materials that are not immediately available online or at the user's home library, customers can submit an interlibrary loan request. Search results also include links to online bookstores where the materials can be purchased.

Notes a University of North Texas student, "It was great to find out which libraries actually had a resource, instead of searching several library catalogs as I have done in the past. Since I live in Houston, I consider several local libraries as possibilities."

Visit the Library of Texas at LibraryofTexas.org. Users do not need a login ID or password to search library catalogs. To make full use of the Library of Texas, including access to the TexShare databases and interlibrary loan services, login to the service with a TexShare login ID and password available from your local Texas library.

New online resources

The TGCPL now subscribes to Britannica Online and Ancestry Plus. Britannica is a wonderful resource for homework help and includes the content of the print encyclopedia, hyperlinks to authoritative resources on the Internet, photographs, video, and audio clips of historic people, places, and events. Access is available in all three library branches or from home with a valid library card.

The library also subscribes to Ancestry Plus, a genealogy database that includes census records; birth, marriage, and death records; immigration records; ship passenger lists; military records; historic directories; land and probate records; and much more! Access available from within all three branches of the TGCPL.

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 to October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. If you haven't checked out the Spanish-language section of Tom Green County Library in a while, now would be a good time to do so. Browse through the book section (bestsellers in Spanish, self-help books, books on health problems, Hispanic history and culture, biographies of notable Hispanic personalities, etc.) Check out the Hispanic selections in the audio visual section.

There is a computer course (Introducción a la Computadora Personal) offered in Spanish each month. Take advantage of the opportunity to learn how to use a computer.

New E-Reference Books

The TGCPL recently added new electronic reference books to the Database collection. The titles include Gale Encyclopedia of Alternative Medicine, Gale Encyclopedia of Surgery, Americans at War, and History Behind the Headlines. These books are available from the catalog/database terminals inside the library and are also accessible over the Internet via the library's database page with a valid library card. We are excited to be able to provide reference materials in this format and look forward to adding more titles soon.

The Portal To Texas History is now available from the Tom Green County Libray Database Page. The mission and scope of this resource follow:

Mission

The Portal to Texas History offers students and lifelong learners a digital gateway to the rich collections held in Texas libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, and private collections. The Portal team at the University of North Texas provides strong leadership by supporting collaborative efforts with its partners, while pursuing the goals of accessibility, best practices, and preservation of historical material.

Scope

Planned content for the Portal embraces all geographic areas of Texas and covers prehistory through the twentieth century. Designed to appeal to historians, students, and lifelong learners, the Portal emphasizes access to primary sources. It features digital reproductions of photographs, maps, letters, documents, books, artifacts, and more. Portal curriculum Primary Source Adventures that comply with TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) standards will highlight relevant materials for classroom teachers.

"A Second Helping of Armadillo Under Glass"

The Tom Green County Library Cookbook Committee has gathered recipes from friends, family and staff to create an all-original 476 recipe cookbook. This cookbook features original artwork by Aurora Nombrano in a hard-cover spiral binding. All sales from the cookbook will go towards the expansion of the Tom Green County Library. The cookbooks will sell for $15.00 and are available at the Main Library (113 W. Beauregard); Angelo West Branch (3013 Vista Del Arroyo); North Angelo Branch (3001 N. Chadbourne); and the Bookmobile.

Reach Out and Read Shares Free Books

Children's September Story Programs

Downtown TGC library Children's public Story Programs for the month of September will focus on "Colorful Critters". A "Plaidypus", a "Crafty Chameleon" and other colorful characters will be presented through picture books each Wednesday at 10:00 AM. Preschoolers and younger are invited for stories, songs, and activities. All programs are free of charge and approximately 30 minutes long. Childcare providers with groups of 10 or more children are welcome to arrange individual times during the week for Story Programs. The Tom Green County Library is exploring the use of the old Hemphill-Wells building as an expanded Main Library. The Library Board and a group of citizens will make recommendations to the Tom Green County Commissioner's Court sometime in September.

Library Book Sale!
The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale begins June 17 at 6:00 p.m. and continues through Sunday the 19th at 8:00 p.m. The sale will be held at the Lee Jr. High Cafeteria with proceeds to benefit the Tom Green County Library.

Wireless Hotspot at the Tom Green County Library (Main Branch)!
Tom Green County Library is pleased to offer wireless Internet access to our patrons. Simply bring your wireless-enabled laptop computer or other device to the Library, turn it on, and go. There is no charge to use the service and the best part is there is no waiting for an available PC! In order to connect, your computer must have a WiFi-compatible network card installed (802.11a, 802.11b, or 802.11g). You'll find that signal strength is best the closer you sit to the Circulation Area. Wireless users agree to abide by the Library Internet Use Policy.

Memorial Day
Library will be closed May 30 th for Memorial Day but will reopen at 9:00 a.m. the following day.

The architect has been given approval to proceed with the Construction Document Phase for the Tom Green County Library expansion project, in order to prepare for formal bidding of the projected work. In order to reduce our costs the County Judge, Mike Brown, has acquired Jail Work Crews to begin demolition in basement. They will begin work on March 2 of this year by tearing out walls and ceilings within the basement. In the meantime County crews are salvaging materials from the basement that might be useful.

HeritageQuest
Thanks to the efforts of TexShare member libraries, genealogy/history societies, Friends groups and interested individuals the pledge drive for HeritageQuest was a success. HeritageQuest will continue to be offered from within the library and from home computers via the library web page .Library Database Page

The library is offering several free computer classes for the month of May, including Introduction to the PC on Tuesday, May 11 at 10:00 A.M. and Friday, May 21 at 10:00 A.M.; Introduction to E-mail Monday, May 10 at 2:00 P.M.; Introduction to the Internet on Wednesday, May 12 at 2:00 P.M.; Genealogy on the Web on Thursday, May 13 at 2:00, Go Beyond the Internet with Texshare on Thursday, May 20 at 10:00 A.M.; Shopping on the WWW on Thursday, May 27 at 5:30 P.M.; and Introduccion a la computadora personal on Tuesday, May 18 at 5:30.
